    The subject of ancient history at Humboldt-University is understood in the sense of the epochs and cultures comprising the entire Mediterranean realm and neighboring regions and the history of their aftereffects on the Mediterranean and Europe to the present.
There are two chairs and a junior professor in the department of history. So we have not only the traditional division in Greek and Roman history, but there is also a broad differentiation with regard to focus areas. Theory and disciplinary history as well as  methodology are taken into consideration. Thus a natural tension between a traditional, methodological oriented "Altertumswissenschaft" and recent historical approaches with their deep obligation towards theory is made fruitful.
